Where we might walk
A few of the places we’d use for Rochdale walks, from parks close to town to reservoirs on the edge of the moors. James picks the place to suit your dog and the length of the walk: a half-hour stays close to home, and the further spots suit an hour or a full day.
The borough’s largest park, on Bolton Road between Rochdale and Heywood. Wooded slopes run down to the Roch Valley, with a lake and open grass.
A large Victorian park on Falinge Road, close to the town centre, with formal gardens and a duck pond. Good for a steady half-hour.
A wooded ravine on the River Spodden, north of the town. Wide tracks near the old railway viaduct, with narrower, steeper paths towards the falls.
A wide stone track of about two and a half miles around the water, above Wardle. Sheep graze the moor around it, so leads stay on up there.
A flat circuit of a little over two miles around the lake at Littleborough. It gets busy at weekends, so it suits confident dogs and longer walks.
Where we walk depends on your dog and the conditions on the day.
